Der Bauer im Kölner Karneval

Bauer und Jungfrau als ständige Begleiter des Prinzen gibt es erst seit 1883. Da der Bauer im Gegensatz zum Prinzen eine historische Figur aus der Kölner Stadtgeschichte ist, finden wir ihn auf Denkmälern immer als Krieger mit Schwert dargestellt. Schon auf den frühen Abbildungen trug er einen Federbusch auf dem Hut.

Das Ornat des Bauern im Karneval wechselte anfangs noch laufend. Mal trug er gestreifte Hosen und ein kurzes Samtoberteil, mal einen kurzen Mantel mit passender Hose, mal ein Oberteil, welches rechts weiß und links rot war. Sein Hut war niedrig, mehr eine Mütze, darauf das Stadtwappen und wenige kurze Pfauenfedern. Die Pfauenfeder, das Symbol für Treue und Unsterblichkeit steht hier für die Unsterblichkeit der Stadt Köln, die der Bauer verkörpert.

Erst nach dem ersten Weltkrieg kommen Kettenhemd und Kettenhose als fester Bestandteil des Ornats auf. Sie erinnern wieder daran, dass der Bauer ursprünglich einen Krieger darstellte. Das gesamte Ornat einschließlich Hut hat sich seit dieser Zeit nur noch geringfügig verändert. Die Zahl der Pfauenfedern auf dem Hut war viele Jahre auf 125 festgelegt, obwohl diese Zahl jeder historischen Grundlage entbehrt. Mit einem Schneiderwechsel in den letzten Jahren hat sich diese Zahl aufgrund einer anderen Arbeitstechnik etwas verändert.
